Rick Pitino Backed Out As Puerto Rico National Basketball Team Coach

Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino signed on in December to coach J.J. Barea and the Puerto Rican national team as it attempts to qualify this summer for the 2012 Olympics in London. Pitino backed out on Wednesday, citing various reasons.

One report suggested that one reason Pitino opted against it is because Barea and countryman Carlos Arroyo, now with the Boston Celtics, have decided not to play. That would rank as major surprise. Both players, the only Puerto Ricans in the NBA, have been committed to Puerto Rico's national team and both met with Pitino in Miami before the Mavs played the Heat back in December.

Barea, for one, was excited to have Pitino lead the team after Puerto Rico's disappointing showing in last summer's FIBA World Championships in Turkey.

"I'm excited for it. We need a guy like that. It's going to help us as a team," Barea said then. "He'll bring defense and discipline and I think guys will listen to him more than they listen to the guys in Puerto Rico just because he's Rick Pitino."

So will Barea suit up for his country? Before the Mavs boarded the plane bound for Portland, Barea said he thinks he and Arroyo will continue to captain the team.

LAS VEGAS -- Juan Manuel Lopez does not like to waste time.


For the third consecutive fight, the junior featherweight titleholder from Puerto Rico scored a first-round knockout, this time blowing away Argentina's Sergio Medina in 1 minute, 14 seconds on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the undercard of the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao welterweight showdown.

Juan Manuel Lopez wasted little time blasting out Sergio Medina in under a round on Saturday.
"This is a big stage and it's a bit of [a] letdown that I could not give the fans an even better fight," Lopez said.

Lopez (24-0, 22 KOs), 25, retained his title for the second time as he pounded Medina with ease, dropping him three times before referee Joe Cortez called it off without a count following the third knockdown.

Lopez went at Medina (33-2, 18 KOs), 26, with right hooks, using that powerful weapon to help him score all three knockdowns.

"He looked a little scared to me," Lopez said. "I didn't think I hit him that hard, but he kept going down."

Lopez crushed Daniel Ponce Lopez in the first round to win the title in June and then blew out Cesar Figueroa for another first-round knockout in his initial defense in October.

Top Rank might bring Lopez back for his next defense on Feb. 21, on the undercard of welterweight Miguel Cotto's comeback fight against Michael Jennings.

Lopez would like to fight recognized division champion Israel Vazquez, who was in attendance at the fight.

"Obviously, I would like to fight Israel Vazquez," Lopez said. "He is best in the division and until I beat him I do not think I am best at 122. I know there are other champions at 122, but I feel Vazquez would be best for me."

Jose Barea saw the shot clock running down and a small opening toward the basket.


The 6-foot guard drove down the baseline, challenged a pair of much taller defenders and spun in an improbable reverse layup with his left hand that rolled around the rim before finally going in.

It's been that kind of week for Barea.

Barea scored 16 of his season-high 22 points in the third quarter and the Dallas Mavericks held on late after nearly losing a 19-point lead, beating the Atlanta Hawks 100-98 on Saturday night for their ninth win in 10 games.

"It's just been great just being out there with the guys," Barea said. "Winning has been the most important thing. My confidence gets higher and higher."

Barea, who saw only sporadic playing time before this week, has played a key role in the first three games of a seven-game homestand -- Dallas' longest of the season.

He hit the winning 3-pointer Tuesday to beat the Los Angeles Clippers and then scored 18 points in his first start of the season two days later, a lopsided victory over Phoenix.

Barea capped a memorable week with his best performance since scoring a career-high 25 points last November 3.

"I'm a believer that anything is possible," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Would I have predicted it? No."

Barea was 7-of-9 from the floor in the third, and Dallas outscored Atlanta 33-16 in the quarter to take a 15-point lead.

Atlanta led 43-41 at halftime before Barea and the Mavericks responded in the third.

Barea scored eight points in an 11-2 run that put Dallas up 74-59 heading into the final quarter.

The 6-foot Puerto Rican guard opened the fourth with a pair of baskets. One of those was the reverse layup that brought Nowitzki and his teammates up off the bench.

"I thank God that shot went in," Barea said.

Nowitzki, Barea lead Mavs past Suns

The Mavs have a good chance to keep climbing with the next five games at home. And they might’ve found a spark from the new wrinkle of pairing 5-foot-11 backup point guard J.J. Barea in the lineup with Jason Kidd. Sometimes they’ve even gone to a three-point-guard lineup with Terry joining them.

Carlisle used that in the fourth quarter when Phoenix got within 10. Barea then scored or set up every point in a 10-0 run. Soon after, he nailed a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 23 and punctuated it with a loud scream drowned out by a roar from fans already on their feet.

“When you have confidence you can do anything and his confidence is high right now,” Kidd said of Barea.

“He’s fearless,” added Nowitzki. “He’s small, but for some reason he’s a great finisher in there. He gets to the seams. I just really like that he’s in attack mode.”

Barea, who earned the start by hitting the winning shot in the final minute of the previous game, finished with a season-best 18 points. Terry scored 19, continuing his strong play off the bench to make up for the scoring punch lost by Josh Howard being out with an ankle injury. Dallas is 6-1 in the seven straight games he’s missed.

Although these teams no longer score like they used to, the Mavericks did a good imitation of their former selves in the first half, scoring 33 points in the first quarter and a season-best 64 by halftime.

The Suns kept up with the pace the first 11 1/2 minutes, then Dallas broke the game open with a 21-4 spurt.
